This private dining room, with its black wooden structure, is a testament to the timeless beauty of traditional design reimagined for contemporary tastes.

Architectural Inspiration

The space draws inspiration from ancient Song Dynasty aesthetics buildings, featuring elements that transport diners to a bygone era:

  • Intricately designed lattice windows on the doors
  • Wall decorations featuring scanned antique Song Dynasty paintings from museums
  • A predominantly black color scheme that exudes sophistication and opulence

Centerpiece Lighting

Suspended from the ceiling is the pièce de résistance - an Isamu Noguchi Light Sculpture, specifically the Akari 100A Washi Paper Pendant Lamp. This ethereal fixture seems to float in mid-air, creating a captivating interplay with the decorative painting behind the host's seat.

At the heart of the room lies an 80-inch diameter black circular dining table. A centerpiece of greenery adorns the table, reflecting the host's welcoming spirit. This layout, uncommon in Western restaurants, is perfect for the Asian cuisine focus of the hotel owner.

Surrounding the table are eight Solid Teak Wood Pierre Jeanneret Chandigarh Dining Chairs Without Arms. These mid-century modern pieces complement the classic aesthetics of the room, proving that great design is indeed timeless.

Indoor-Outdoor Connection

A corridor just outside the dining room serves as a transitional space between the interior and the outdoor courtyard. This "gray space" in architectural terms allows guests to enjoy the landscape views while being shielded from direct sunlight.

Design Elements and Tips

Choosing the Right Table Size

For an 8-person circular dining table, we recommend a diameter of 80 inches. Here's a handy formula: Table Diameter = (Number of Diners * 30") / 3.14

Pendant Light Height

The ideal height for large decorative pendant lights above dining tables is at least 63 inches from the floor. For smaller tables, such as a 4-person rectangular table, aim for around 55 inches.

Rug Sizing

The rug should extend at least 30 inches beyond the table edge. For this project: Rug Diameter = 30" + 80" + 30" = 140"

Flooring Choice

The room features terracotta tiles, a traditional Eastern material. These eco-friendly tiles absorb moisture, creating a cool and fresh atmosphere - perfect for New York's hot and humid summers.

This private dining room is a masterclass in blending cultural influences, balancing luxury with functionality, and creating a space that's both visually stunning and practically designed for memorable dining experiences.
